Scripture for the Week

Colossians 2:6- 7, CSB

“So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in him, being rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude.”

There is something especially fitting about beginning this blog with these verses because the word rooted represents so much of what we want this community to be. Paul reminds us that receiving Christ is not the end of our faith journey. It is the beginning of a life spent continuing to walk with Him, growing in our understanding of His Word, becoming established in our faith, and allowing our lives to reflect what we believe.

Being rooted in Christ does not mean that every season will be easy. It means that when life changes, our foundation does not have to change with it. There will be seasons of excitement, seasons of uncertainty, seasons of waiting, seasons of growth, and seasons when we have to trust God even when we do not understand what He is doing. Through all of them, Christ remains our foundation.

A tree with deep roots may still experience strong winds, heavy rain, and changing seasons, but its roots help it remain standing. Our relationship with Christ works in much the same way. The deeper we grow in God’s Word, prayer, obedience, and dependence on Him, the more prepared we become to navigate the circumstances that come our way.

That is the kind of growth we want to encourage here each week.

This Week’s Encouragement

You do not have to have your entire life figured out before you can move forward with God. There may be areas of your life where you are still waiting for answers, trying to understand a change, or wondering what the next season will look like. It can be tempting to believe that you need clarity about everything before you can experience peace, but God does not require you to know the entire path before you take the next step.

Sometimes faith looks like continuing to walk when you can only see a few steps ahead.

If you are in a season where you feel uncertain, do not assume that uncertainty means God has forgotten you. If you are experiencing a delay, do not automatically assume that nothing is happening. God can work in ways that are invisible to us. He can prepare us while we wait, redirect us through circumstances we did not expect, and use ordinary moments to develop the character He wants to see in us.

Your current season still matters. The life you are living today still has purpose. There are people you can encourage, things you can learn, responsibilities you can faithfully handle, and opportunities to grow closer to God right where you are.

Do not become so focused on where you are trying to go that you miss what God is doing where you are now.

Stay rooted. Keep walking. Keep learning. Keep trusting.

Bible Study

Rooted and Built Up in Christ

For this week’s study, take some time to read Colossians 2:6 to 15 in your Bible. Before reading, take a moment to ask God to help you understand His Word and show you how it applies to your life.

Read the passage once to understand the overall message. Then read it a second time more slowly. As you read, pay attention to Paul’s instructions about continuing to walk with Christ, being rooted and built up in Him, remaining established in the faith, and refusing to allow other influences to pull you away from the truth.

The passage is ultimately about building your life on Jesus rather than allowing everything around you to become your foundation. Paul wanted believers to understand that their faith could not be based solely on what was happening around them. Their confidence needed to be grounded in Christ.

That message is just as relevant today.

We live in a world where opinions change quickly, circumstances can change overnight, and people are constantly being encouraged to find their identity in accomplishments, relationships, careers, appearance, money, popularity, and social media. None of those things can provide the kind of foundation that Christ provides.

When your identity is rooted in Christ, you do not have to become a different person every time your circumstances change. A difficult season does not erase who you are in Him. A disappointing outcome does not determine your worth. A closed door does not mean your purpose has ended. A mistake does not mean God cannot continue working in your life.

Paul also uses the language of being built up, which reminds us that spiritual growth takes time. A strong life is not built in one day, and a mature faith does not develop overnight. It is built through consistent time in God’s Word, prayer, worship, obedience, community, repentance, and a willingness to allow God to correct and shape us.

As you read this passage, think about what is currently forming the foundation of your life. What receives most of your attention? Where do you turn when you are stressed? What influences your decisions? What determines how you see yourself?

These questions can reveal where our roots truly are.

Reflection

After reading Colossians 2:6 to 15, spend some time writing about these questions:

What does being rooted in Christ look like in my life right now?

What influences my thoughts and decisions the most?

Is there an area where I have been depending more on myself than on God?

What spiritual habit would help me become more consistent in my relationship with Christ?

What has God been teaching me recently that I do not want to forget?

The goal of this study is not simply to finish a passage of Scripture. The goal is to allow God’s Word to examine our lives and show us where we can grow.

Journal Focus

Where Are My Roots?

This week’s journal focus is an invitation to slow down and honestly examine what has been influencing your life.

Take a few minutes to write about where you currently feel spiritually strong and where you feel spiritually stretched. Think about the areas where you naturally trust God and the areas where you find yourself trying to control everything.

Then finish this statement in your journal:

“I want to become more rooted in Christ by…”

Do not overthink your answer. Write what genuinely comes to mind, and then choose one practical way to act on it this week.

Maybe you need to become more consistent with Scripture. Maybe you need to make more room for prayer. Maybe you need to stop allowing comparison to influence how you see yourself. Maybe you need to surrender something you have been trying to control.

Whatever God brings to your attention, take it seriously and bring it to Him.
